Neil Chue Hong is the founding Director and PI of the Software Sustainability Institute and a Senior Research Fellow at EPCC, based at the University of Edinburgh. He graduated with an MPhys in Computational Physics, also from the University of Edinburgh. He completed an internship at Unilever in their Business Systems department before joining EPCC as a technology transfer consultant working on machine vision projects for SMEs. He then worked as a project manager at EPCC on data access and integration projects in collaboration with industry, before moving to the University of Southampton to lead the Open Middleware Infrastructure Institute (OMII-UK) during the UK e-Science programme. In 2010, he returned to Edinburgh to establish the Software Sustainability Institute. His current research interests include software sustainability, research software ecosystems, and impact of research software policy. He is a co-chair of the FORCE11 Software Citation Implementation and RDA/ReSA/FORCE11 FAIR for Research Software (FAIR4RS) working groups. Recent policy work includes the OECD Policy Paper on “Building digital workforce capacity and skills for data-intensive science” and the NISO Recommended Practice on “Reproducibility Badging and Definitions”. Advisory roles include chairing the MetOffice/UKRI ExCALIBUR steering committee, being a member of the UKRI-BBSRC Transformative Technologies strategic advisory panel, UKRI-STFC Particle Physics Technology Advisory Panel and Software Preservation Network steering committee, and being past chair of the EPSRC e-Infrastructure strategic advisory team. He is the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Open Research Software, co-editor of “Software Engineering for Science”, and co-author of “Best Practices for Scientific Computing”, advocate for The Carpentries, and a Fellow of the British Computer Society.
